Letter from the Camp Director

Dear Parents and Campers,

On a hot summer day in June of 1967, an eight-year-old little girl arrived by bus at Camp Y.I..

Earlier that day, 100 or more girls ages 8-15 had met at the Sears parking lot in downtown Nashville. Once the trunks were packed and several hugs and kisses later, they waved goodbye to their somewhat reluctant parents and envious younger siblings.

Knowing only her older sister and never having heard of this place called LaVergne, the little girl wasn't quite sure what the next two weeks would bring. Thankfully, sitting next to her, a stranger who would turn out to be a lifelong friend. Apprehensive about the days ahead, they found comfort in their new friendship.

The trip to Camp grew with excitement as the busload of girls chattered with anticipation. The dirt road seemed to go on forever. Once inside the front gate, she saw the Barn, the horses, the swimming pool and her soon to be counselors waving the campers in as if they just couldn't wait to start having FUN! She and her new friend were both assigned to cabin # 1 and the adventure and memories of a lifetime began.

The friendships with fellow campers, the counselors and the activities drew her back year after year. Both she and her friend were campers for many years, then service campers, counselors and programs directors. College, career and parenthood would be her life for the next several years. And then her lifelong dream would come true. On Sept. 1, 2004, I became the Camp Director at Camp Y.I..

I grew up in Nashville and have lived here all my life. I attended Belmont University and graduated with a BA in Business Administration. Over the past 20 years I have been a certified Fitness Instructor, the Director of a Group Fitness Department and a Realtor for 11 of those years.

Many of you I know already as I have been volunteering at camp over the past couple of years. I look forward to getting to know all of you in the near future.

I welcome your comments and suggestions and look forward to a summer of FUN.

Sincerely,

Kim Davis Hutchison
